A Victory for Principle

Posted by JHC in Campaign

The New York Times is reporting that Sen. John McCain has accepted Sen. Obama’s challenge to use only public funds in the general election. According to the article, “a spokesman for Mr. McCain said that he would take up Mr. Obama on a proposal for an accord between the two major party nominees to rely just on public financing for the general election.”

Smart move by the McCain camp. It saves him having to potentially answer the challenge under pressure later, and simultaneously puts him on the right side of the issue. Not too shabby for Sen. Obama either, who is effectively speaking as the Democratic nominee.

Most importantly, the 2008 presidential campaign could be the first in U.S. history to be completely special interest-free. Let’s hope we have a chance to see that.
